WHAT IS THE VINTAGE PATTERN LENDING LIBRARY?
The Vintage Pattern Lending Library is home to a continuously expanding collection of historic sewing and needlework patterns, rare publications, and other fashion related materials dated from the 1840s through the 1950s. The archives contain materials from countries around the world.
Our mission is to return as many of these items as possible into public access, so that anyone with a love for historic fashion can experience them as close to the originals as is possible.
ARE THE MATERIALS AVAILABLE ORIGINALS OR REPRODUCTIONS?
All items available through the Library are high quality reproductions of originals. The source materials are extremely fragile, and frequent handling would cause them to disintegrate.
Patterns are digitized using a CAD table and specialized software. All markings, symbols, and labels are transcribed and additional information is added such as seam allowances, grain lines and text to help the modern seamstress in construction. NO changes are made to the original shape of the pieces in order to preserve the historical accuracy.
Our sewing patterns also come with clear, concise transcriptions of any instructions or diagrams that were included with the originals. Patterns are printed on durable 15-pound semi-transparent bond paper, in three colors so cutting, pinning and construction is easy.
IS MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED TO PURCHASE PATTERNS?
Absolutely NOT. All patterns are available for purchase. When shopping, utilize the drop-down menu to reflect non-member pricing.
WHAT IS A MEMBERSHIP?
A VPLL membership is $25.00 and renewal each year. Members receive three free member loans per year, limit one at a time, and/or until return of the previous loaner. After redeeming the three member loans, patterns may then be checked out for $5.00 per pattern per month (with a limit of FIVE). Members receive a 10% discount on all full pattern purchases. To purchase a Library Membership see the home page sidebar.
HOW DOES THE LOAN PROGRAM WORK?
Patterns are checked out one at a time for one month. Loans are shipped to you in envelopes, boxes or padded mailers via USPS First Class or Priority Mail depending on the package weight. International memberships are not recommended as the shipping fees incurred would be cost prohibitive.
Once your pattern arrives, it is yours to use just like any other pattern and may be cut apart for convenience. Upon returning, make sure ALL cut pieces and sewing instructions are placed back in the envelope. If you accidentally damage or lose a loan item, don't worry just let us know so we can replace the missing part for the next borrower.
When finished, return pattern to the Library via regular mail. Please do NOT use USPS 'Media Mail'. This package does not comply with U.S.P.S. regulations and they will return it to you, the sender.
MAY I MAKE A COPY OF A PATTERN I BORROW TO USE LATER?
The Library puts no restrictions on its patrons personal use of the materials they buy or borrow.
WHAT IF THE PATTERN I WANT ISN'T IN MY SIZE?
Nancy Zieman's book Pattern Fitting With Confidence is one of the best and easiest methods of altering patterns to an individuals measurements.
AND THE BEST PART OF ALL
For every pattern review with pictures that you send back to the Library, your account will be awarded 5 points. Accumulated points may be used toward future purchases, they do add up. And just think of the other sewers who will benefit from your helpful hints and construction tips.
